Athena Cooper is an acrylic and digital painter born in Vancouver and based in Calgary. Trained as an animator, her artwork is strongly influenced by her love of the vibrant colours and interplay of light found in stained glass.
Born with the rare genetic disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka ‘brittle bone disease’), and a wheelchair-user since the age of six, the images Athena creates appear as though they have been passed through her own glass-like nature to become windows into how she sees the world. She has been particularly inspired by the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany and has spent several years making detailed studies of that work with the aim of replicating the look of stained glass in the paint.
In 2020, Athena exhibited virtually as part of the group shows, “MASKED: Self Portraits of a Pandemic”, presented by The Ikouii Creative in Atlanta, GA, and as part of the “Emerging Artist Exhibit” presented by the Pumphouse Theatre in association with the IGNITE! Emerging Artist Festival here in Calgary.
