Jessica Peatman

I am an emerging artist working in Amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton) and I received a BFA in Visual Arts in 2017. Using illustrative techniques, I am creating whimsical worlds and characters inspired by fantasy illustration and pop surrealism. My process embraces mainly analogue techniques in the hopes to achieve a unique, handmade quality as well as to escape the growing digitization of everyday life. Narrative elements have always been a part of my art practice, and I embrace them fully in this new body of work. I am particularly interested in mysterious aspects of the world often described in fairy tales, folklore and ancient cultures. The magic and mystery of the past seem to fade as technology continues to debunk old myths and discover new truths. I find it intriguing that as we develop new technologies to understand the past, the evidence grows older and becomes harder to interpret. It is as though our quest for knowledge is hindered by our own quest for progression to obtain that knowledge. In a time ruled by cold hard facts that leave nothing to the imagination, I hope these works can provoke honest moments of curiosity and wonderment for the past and the tales of our ancestors.
