ADFA and Pumphouse Theatre: Calgary Region One Act Play Festival 2023: Call for Volunteers!
The Pumphouse Theatre is looking for volunteer ushers for each night of the upcoming Calgary Region One Act Play Festival happening March 24 and 25th. Volunteers get to see the shows for free!

Shows are 7:30pm nightly. Ushers are expected to arrive at 6:45pm. Ushers will be trained on appropriate safety procedures and their individual roles (ripping tickets, passing out programs, assisting patrons to their seats). Ushers are expected to stay until the theatre has been vacated. Shows vary in runtime each night, and therefore the indicated end-time may change.
Ushers are not required to wear any particular colour or style of clothing. Heels are not recommended. 

We will provide you with basic theatre safety training and assign specific roles (ticket taker, program, etc) on the night.

SPRING 2022 DRAMA DAY CAMP

Where every day is a little bit different! This drama camp offers a wide range of activities and drama games, taught by a team of professional instructors. Spend the day learning a variety of new drama lessons and skills, and throughout the week students work to develop a performance that will be performed on the final day of camp and then shared with family and friends, allowing students to put their new skills to practical use. This year’s theme is Rock n Roll!

Fee: $325.00

All drama education courses will be adhering to all recommended COVID-19 health and safety protocols including masks, sanitization, and social distancing.

All courses, with the exception of our customized programs, will take place at the Pumphouse Theatre (2140 Pumphouse Ave SW) if not otherwise stated.

Register before March 1st and receive our Early Bird Discount of $10 off. Register two or more members of the same immediate family and receive our Multi-Child Discount of $10 off.

Withdrawal or cancellation of a registration is allowed, given it is more than 10 days prior to the start of an educational course and may be subject to a $25.00 cancellation fee.

Carole Bondaroff

Carole Bondaroff was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. She attended Sir George Williams University in Montreal and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax where she received her BFA in Printmaking and Art Education.

Carole lives in Calgary where she is an active artist and art educator. She has taught at the University of Calgary, the Alberta College of Art and Design, the Glenbow Museum, both Calgary School Boards and as an Artist in Residence, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, since its inception in 1986.

Since 1978, Carole has been co-proprietor of The Heart Studio in Calgary, a multi-disciplined art facility featuring art exhibitions and art programs including classes for adults and children.

During her extensive travels, Ms. Bondaroff has had the opportunity to work as a visiting artist at several internationally renowned studios including “St Michael’s Printshop,” Newfoundland; “Escuela Nationale des Bellas Artes,” Murcia, Spain; “Taller de Grabado Tarasco,” Uruapan, Mexico; and “Atelier de L’Ile,” Val David, Québec.

Carole is an active member of the Alberta Printmaker’s Society and the Alberta Society of Artists.

Her works can be found in private and corporate collections nationally and internationally including The Royal Palace in Monaco, The Calgary Consul General of Japan, The Alberta Foundation for the Arts and The Canada Council Art Bank in Ottawa.

Emerging Artist Exhibit

Emerging Artist!

In association with IGNITE! Festival for Emerging Artists.

April 16th to June 20th, 2020

The Pumphouse Theatre is a vibrant facility with historical significance. It supports and presents all art forms and creates opportunities for engagement, enrichment, cultural experience, learning and inspiration, while serving all Calgarians. To enable this, the Quenten Doolittle Memorial Gallery provides accessible wall display space for Calgary and Alberta visual artists to display and sell their work, free from commission.

IGNITE! is a festival dedicated to supporting, mentoring, and presenting emerging artists of all disciplines. IGNITE! allows artists to embrace risks in a supportive environment while providing resources, a bridge to the professional arts community, and meaningful opportunities for collaboration and community building with their peers. IGNITE! will take place June 10th – June 13th, 2020 at the Pumphouse Theatres. 

Artists will be given a choice to opt into allowing their work to be adjudicated to become the official art piece of IGNITE! 2020. All submissions will be displayed from April 16th, 2020 to June 20th, 2020. If selected to be the official art piece of IGNITE! 2020, artists will receive an artist festival pass and an honorarium for the use of their image in marketing material. Artists must submit their art before January 31st, 2020 to be considered for the official art piece of IGNITE! 2020. All pieces not selected will still be considered for The Quenten Doolittle Memorial Gallery Emerging Artist Exhibit.

Submissions must meet the following requirements: 

  • Artist resides in Alberta and must be available for installation. 
  • Artist must identify as Emerging (less than 5 years of experience) 
  • Artwork must be delivered ready to hang (wall-space only) 

Installation Requirements: All art MUST be equipped with picture hanging wire and D rings (a piece of metal hardware shaped like the letter D used on the back of frame or canvas as hooking device). Hanging cleats or flat metal hardware unfortunately will not be accepted.

The Pumphouse Theatre will install the work on behalf of the artists. Artwork may be dropped off or picked up by ei- ther the artist or a representative during the hours of 12pm and 6pm on the installation and take down dates provided. Artist must reserve an installation and take down date via a provided online form or by contacting the Programming Director. 

Timeline: 

  • Final Submission Deadline: March 13th, 2020, 4pm
    • If you wish to be considered for IGNITE! 2020, you must submit before January 31st, 2020.
  • Installation: April 12th – April 14th, 2020
  • Gallery Close: June 20th, 2020
  • Gallery Take Down: June 21st – June 23rd, 2020

  • Completed Gallery Submission Form 
  • Artist Biography (250 words max) 
    • A short description of who you are and your art background, training, passion, and/or any combination of the fore mentioned information 
  • Artwork: A minimum of 1 to a maximum of 5 pieces will be accepted 
    • Images of artwork only; do not send original works with application

Selection Process: Art pieces are selected by a committee of no less than 3 people and are a mix of artists and administrators. Selection criteria are based on suitability to the theme, technique, emotional response, creativity & innovation, and suitability to the Pumphouse Theatre gallery space and its patrons (ages 5 and up, representing various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds). Unfortunately, we are unable to accept works that feature nudity.
