RUBIX MOGENSEN

Rubix Mogensen is a queer, non-binary, neurodivergent, multi-interdisciplinary artist. They explore themes of mental health, identity, queerness, gender expression, body image, sexuality, otherness, and alienation. They use methods and techniques of repetition, distortion, abstraction, fragmentation, defamiliarization, and layering. They are fascinated by repetition to create a sense of controlled chaos.

They enjoy working in a variety of mediums such as photography, wall installations, embroidery, silkscreen fabric murals, abstract ink drawings, mixed media installations, digital collage, needle felting, sculpture, soft sculpture, etc. Rubix works intuitively and they are inspired by found and thrifted materials. They enjoy creating visually chaotic pieces that are full of endless possibilities and exist as transformations in motion. They end up having this psychedelic, kaleidoscope-like feel.

They recently graduated from Alberta University of the Arts (AuArts) in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and for their grad piece they created a large mixed media art installation, called The Queer Garden that pulled from their mixed skill set to build a whimsical queer wonderland-esque environment. The main themes for this project were queer maximalism, queer dreamscapes and utopias, adornment and the queer body, and queer spaces and environments. The goal of this art piece was to create something that is visibly and inherently queer. The installation was a love letter to the queer community, a celebration of queer joy and giving value to messy, playful imaginary worlds and maximalist artworks.
